Tech 101: Understand Human Psychology

So, it’s the weekend.
Today, we’ll explore something fascinating.
This might be your first time hearing about it in your journey through the cybersecurity industry or the world of tech.
It’s not often discussed, but since you’re in my private tribe, I won’t keep anything from you.
Let’s dive in.
We’ll be talking about the importance of psychology in the tech world.
Why you need to understand people.
At first glance, psychology and cybersecurity may seem like completely separate fields.
One studies the human mind, while the other protects digital systems.
But they are deeply connected.
Understanding human behavior is essential for effective cybersecurity.
Here’s why:
Everyone in business is in the business of people.
Amazon sells products to people.
Banks serve people.
Walmart sells to people.
Uber drives people.
Tesla makes people buy cars.
Doctors treat people.
Cybersecurity protects people’s data and shields them from cyber threats.
As a tech professional or cybersecurity expert, you need to understand how people behave.
This will help you see how cyber threats exploit human vulnerabilities.
For instance:
Phishing attacks rely on social engineering — manipulating emotions like fear, urgency, or curiosity to trick users into clicking malicious links or revealing sensitive information.
Weak passwords or reusing passwords stem from human tendencies like choosing convenience over security.
Insider threats often arise from motivations such as revenge, financial gain, or simple negligence.
Understanding psychology helps cybersecurity experts:
✅ Predict common human errors
✅ Design systems that are resilient to manipulation
✅ Educate users effectively
Beyond this, it’s also important to understand yourself, your team members, and how your bosses operate within a company.
You need to know what makes each team member unique — their strengths and weaknesses.
This knowledge helps you foster teamwork and improve communication in your workplace.
You’ll know how to get your team working effectively without micromanaging them.
When you understand your bosses, you learn the language they speak.
Just like one of my students, Dorcas Akintade, shared how she knows exactly how to get her boss to agree with her requests.
It’s all because she has learned their language.
Every boss is different.
Some focus on data, others on money, and some care about the company’s image above all.
Your job is to identify what each of them values, what they are interested in, and what they talk about most.
I have even seen cases where people get jobs simply because they share the same name as the interviewer’s wife, mother, or someone close.
Why am I sharing all this?
Because understanding psychology helps you connect deeply with people in your industry.
When you understand people, they will naturally support you
No force required.
